A recent auto safety group believes tractor-trailers would be less likely involved in fatal crashes with side guardrails mounted between their tires. On the other hand, the trucking industry disagrees; explaining that technology that prevents crashes is a “better use of resources.”
Under Federal law large trucks are required to have rear under ride guards which prevent cars from traveling underneath the truck in an accident. The government however does not require side guardrails on trucks – which could save hundreds of lives each year.
David Zuby, the executive vice president and chief research officer at the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety explains, “We think a mandate for side under ride guards on large trucks has merit, especially as crash deaths continue to rise on our roads.”
A recent crash test conducted by the Institute demonstrated the importance side guardrails could have during a crash. When a midsize car traveling 35 mph hits the truck side guardrail, the front of the car crumpled, but the test dummy was protected from the cars seat belt and air bags.
The American Trucking Associations has not come to an agreement on truck side guardrails. There is a lot that has to be considered before a decision can be made, but the trucking industry currently supports safety efforts deployed by technology.
