Auto Safety Regulators Hope to Combat Distracted Driving Epidemic with “Driver Mode” for Cell Phones

Auto safety regulators are requesting that smart phone manufacturers create a “driver mode” for smart phones to help combat the rising number of motor vehicle fatalities and accidents caused by distracted driving.

The new proposed feature is modeled after “airplane mode,” which prevents a mobile device from sending or receiving communications while flying. “Driver mode” would restrict certain mobile apps and features from running while the user is behind the wheel.

This feature could help promote higher levels of concentration and awareness among drivers by giving them less incentive to reach for their phone. As we become increasingly more connected by our mobile devices, people are constantly tempted to use their phones while driving. By restricting certain apps from running while the user is driving, the power of distraction is taken away.
